Founded in 2002 by Francesca von Habsburg, Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary is committed to supporting the production of contemporary art and is actively engaged in commissioning and disseminating unconventional projects. The foundation has an ongoing institutional commitment to the growing importance of art made in different parts of the world and explores modes of presentation that are intended to provoke and broaden the way viewers perceive and experience art.


T-B A21, 2002 von Francesca von Habsburg gegründet, unterstützt die Produktion zeitgenössischer Kunstwerke und begleitet ihre Realisierung und Vermittlung. Programmatisch liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der Erfassung der regionalen Breite und Diversität künstlerischer Formen und Wissensdisziplinen, welche die Modalitäten von sinnlicher Wahrnehmung und sprachlicher Erfahrung herausfordern.



Exhibition opening: “Amar Kanwar: The Torn First Pages”
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2008, 7:00 P.M.
“The Torn First Pages” is an ode to the region of Burma, to Aung San Suu Kyi, to the courage of the democracy movement and to Ko Than Htay, the owner of a bookshop in Mandalay who was sentenced to three years imprisonment because of tearing out the first pages of the books he sold. By an order of the military government, all these first pages had printed on them the slogan of the military regime and an official denunciation of the democratic forces. Illuminating issues such as contemporary nonviolent resistance, political exile, memory and dislocation, this exhibition presents films by Amar Kanwar, accompanied by works by Burmese activists and filmmakers.

„The Torn First Pages“ ist eine Ode an Burma, an Aung San Suu Kyi, an die Zivilcourage und an Ko Than Htay, ein Buchhändler in Mandalay, der zu drei Jahren Gefängnis verurteilt wurde, weil er aus Büchern die erste Seite gerissen hatte, bevor er sie verkaufte. Auf Anordnung der Militärregierung mussten diese Seiten mit Parolen des Regimes und einer offiziellen Denunziation der demokratischen Kräfte versehen sein. Die Ausstellung präsentiert Filme von Amar Kanwar sowie Arbeiten burmesischer Aktivisten und Filmemacher und beleuchtet aktuelle Themen wie gewaltlosen Widerstand, politisches Exil, Erinnerung und Dislokation.
