Public Art Tour to Gelatin "MYX", BRG/BORG Lessinggasse and Mark Dion "Vivarium St. Marx"
Anne Kathrin Fessler, freelance cultural journalist and author, leads to the Kunst am Bau projects “MYX” by Gelatin (BRG/BORG Lessinggasse) and “Vivarium St. Marx” by Mark Dion (Biology Center University of Vienna).
MYX is a three-dimensional, brightly coloured sculpture that serves as a mascot for the students at the school. It is something of a superbeing that conveys a sense of identity and aims to accompany the youngsters as they navigate school life. It personifies the imagination, humour and lightness that are needed in addition to learning and working. It also stands for the courage to think and create the extraordinary – “outside the box” – and allows a playful approach to mythology, literature and deductive thinking. The name MYX comes from the word “myxa” (Greek for “mucus”,“slime”) and alludes to bodily fluids, which were thought to be the seat of humour in ancient times.
Mark Dion designed a vivarium resembling a greenhouse for the foyer of the Biologiezentrum. The vivarium contains a tree trunk that was removed from the ecosystem of the construction site and inserted into the university context. It represents a link between inside and outside, between the past of the urban environment and the present of the scientific institution, and also serves as an identifier of this modern biology research centre.
The tour takes place as a bus tour. Due to corona-related hygiene and safety measures, the number of participants is limited.
Please note that participation is only possible with a valid access test and after registration. Please wear an FFP2 mask during the entire visit.
