A cross-media search for clues to the requirements of the material
The Vienna Art Week 2022 questions the norms and orders in art. The event “Requirements of the Material” invites you to a conversation: What it is like when the creation of art does not take place according to a prefabricated plan, but when the materials found pursue their own plan? Does this create a co-authorship between artist and material?
It seems simple at first glance: the material speaks to us and we only have to follow its conditions. But what is the pattern of this process? Does the surface speak to us? The weight, the mass, the resistance that the material exerts when we try to shape it? Is there a universal language of materials? And how can we make use of different strategies to engage in this language? From found footage to material promenadologies.
