Noushin Redjaian, artist, in conversation with Laura Wiesböck, sociologist, Anna Hambira, interdisciplinary artist, & Sira-Zoé Schmid, artist/image right

In her solo exhibition To See Clearly at Bildraum 01, Noushin Redjaian, winner of the PARALLEL VIENNA | Bildrecht YOUNG ARTIST Award 2023, explores the universal connections shared by all people — regardless of origin or cultural background — and highlights the unity of all life.

The way we look at others, and how others look at us, can be filled with many things: from kindness, affection and love, to envy and more. This spectrum is as vast as the full range of human emotions. The history of the “eye” is just as diverse as the gaze itself and stretches back to the beginnings of ancient civilizations. The eye has held great significance in many cultures and religions, from the myth of the Evil Eye to the Salted Gaze. Stories of the eye bringing either misfortune or healing are found worldwide. In her exhibition, Noushin Redjaian brings this narrative into the present. How do gazes shape our lives?

In To See Clearly and through her expansive installation, she invites us to pause — to feel watched or even unsettled. With various representations of “evil eyes” or “clear eyes” — in an almost caricatured form — the artist gives space to both interpretations. Life-sized sculptures, sitting or reclining in the space, play with the motif of eyes. The serpent-like line between Yin and Yang serves as a symbol for “clear vision” and inspired the exhibition’s title. Noushin Redjaian shows us that our greatest treasure lies within ourselves, and that together, we can create a world for one another.

Bildraum 01

In Vienna, once not far from the MuseumsQuartier and once directly in the heart of the Inner City, two exhibition spaces offer the best conditions for contemporary artists to position themselves in the cultural landscape.

While Bildraum 01 in Vienna’s Strauchgasse focuses on contemporary photography and graphic art, Bildraum 07 in Burggasse presents mainly painting, installation and object art.
