The performance explores the repetition of a single movement over a continuous duration of four hours. It unfolds to the music of Vexations by Erik Satie, a seminal work in music history that was first performed in New York in the 1950s at the initiative of John Cage. The score, consisting of sixteen identical measures, is repeated 840 times, immersing the audience in an experience of expanded time and perception transformed through repetition.
The performer’s body, dressed in black, is gradually wrapped in strips of aluminum. This intertwining of body and metal symbolizes the sensual bond that connects the performer to the music. The metallic cord evokes that of the piano—an instrument absent yet central to Vexations—and suggests an invisible presence guiding the performance.
On the occasion of the anniversary of Erik Satie’s death, the performance is presented as a homage.
Following the performance, a curatorial talk with Yvannoe Kruger (POUSH) will take place at 8:00 PM.
“Ecstatic Measure” is a durational performance; the audience is free to enter and leave during the presentation.
