EVENT LANGUAGE: GERMAN

Accompanying the exhibition ‘Prosuming Art’ in the eSeL Reception in MuseumsQuartier´s Showrooms, art critic Michael Huber and eSeL (Lorenz Seidler www.esel.at) talk about their experiences and different approaches to engaging with contemporary art.

Michael Huber is an art critic for the daily newspaper Kurier and was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Art Criticism 2025. The humorous drawings on press-conference folders of art institutions that are being shown in the exhibition alongside matching eSeL photography are not considered as “artistic practice” by Huber – he describes them as a form of “visual thinking” – spontaneous “notes” that accompany his work as a critic reflecting exhibitions in Vienna.

eSeL (Lorenz Seidler) has been using digital channels to communicate his engagement with contemporary art in Vienna for over 25 years. eSeL sees himself as an “aesthetic life form” that combines authentic curiositywith tireless communication and ongoing photographic documentation of art scene, continuously shared via newsletter, website, and social media.

The conversation highlights different perspectives on documentation, criticism, and participation. At its core lies the question of how journalistic work and personal creative practice can complement each other – and how this can generate new access points.
