The museum is inseparably linked with the Muses, the protectors of the arts. Their name points to memory, to science and education. The art and curiosity cabinets of the 16th and 17th centuries mark the beginning of the modern museum.
They were not just a collection of strange and valuable objects, but encyclopaedic universal collections that were able to represent the entire knowledge of their time. The art cabinet was a place of world knowledge. The Vienna Kunstkammer is the most important collection of its kind.

KUNSTHISTORISCHES MUSEUM WIEN
Built by Karl Hasenauer and Gottfried von Semper between 1871 and 1891, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien ranks among the most renowned museums in the world. Its magnificent architecture provides a worthy setting for collections the Habsburgs built over centuries. These encompass objects from five millennia, i.e. from the time of Ancient Egypt to the end of the 18th century.
