Screening and talk with Cosima Terrasse and Olga Wukounig, Senior Curator KÖR Wien
What does Vienna look like when viewed through its algorithmically managed representation? The video “Gezinkte Karten” takes us through Street View images to the best and worst rated places in Vienna. What emerges is a reflection of the city – shaped by algorithms, fed by users, controlled by economic interests.
Google Maps increasingly determines which parts of the city are seen and used. Users contribute to the platform by uploading photos, information and reviews for free, which Google masks as “participation”. However, the use of Google’s data via the API is anything but free. Anyone can upload, but not everyone has access to the collected data.
In their work, Gruppe Laokoon combines investigative research with various forms of artistic expression. This results in performances, plays and documentary films that focus on the question of how our idea of people and society is changing in the digital age. For “Gezinkte Karten”, Gruppe Laokoon creates a portrait of Vienna based on Google data and feeds it back to the people of the city. Cosima Terrasse presents the video and talks about the project.
An event by KÖR Kunst im öffentlichen Raum Wien in cooperation with Stand 129.
