Travel encompasses a multitude of nuances. As a tourist, one moves from one place to another, changes one’s environment for personal reasons, or is forced to flee due to catastrophes. Travel can or must take place in times of a global pandemic, but also on a metaphorical level. In sleep, dream or death, the mind and body travel and transform into another state of being. What connects all these journeys is the potential of narrative imagery – as Ibn Battuta wrote: “Travel – it makes you speechless and turns you into a storyteller.”
All of the selected artists work with photography or video. Both mediums have the ability to tell and depict stories of travel. In addition, cameras are popular travel companions. The handy format, minimal weight, and reproductive nature make photos and videos nomadic storytellers. They can easily move from one place to another, while their surfaces show lasting traces of journeys of the past.
The title VOYAGOGRAPHY: journeys on photo and video refers to the central questions of the exhibition: How can physical, digital and mental journeys be visualized on photo and video? What about the promise of paradise, the dreams and longings of travel? How do the space and time of travel inscribe themselves in the image?
