Artists today see picture books as an important medium for their work, and in doing so they also address an adult public. In their picture books they present us with their interpretations of the world, focusing on crises, dangers, and catastrophes, as well as hopes, beauty, and harmony. The outstanding works presented in the exhibition PICTURE BOOK ART: The Book as Artistic Medium illuminate this wide range of perspectives: the books on show from the 1960s to the present reflect both current affairs and everyday culture.
This exhibition is a continuation of the children’s book and artists’ book exhibitions shown in the past shown at the MAK in the past. In addition to loans from the Neue Sammlung Friedrich C. Heller, objects from the MAK Collection’s significant holdings of artists’ books will be presented.

MAK – Museum für angewandte Kunst
The role of applied art in shaping our living spaces is the focus of the MAK, which operates at the interface of design, architecture and contemporary art in order to create new perspectives and explore borderline areas. The MAK aims to provide answers to the question of how design can help shape the world and expand possibilities for action and decision-making.
