Travelling encompasses a variety of nuances. One can move physically from one place to another as a tourist or traveller, but people also migrate for personal reasons or are forced to flee due to catastrophes. Yet, journeys can, or in times of a global pandemic, have to happen on a metaphorical plane. Mind and body are wandering and getting transformed into another state of being, when sleeping, dreaming or dying.
For all that, each travel inherits the potential to create a visionary outcome, as Ibn Battuta wrote “Travelling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”
All selected artists work with photography or video. Both media possess the ability to narrate and depict tales of voyages. Cameras are also popular travel companions. The digital format, the minimal weight and the reproductive character turn photos and videos into nomadic storytellers. They can move from one place to another with ease, while their surfaces show lasting traces of past journeys.
The title “VOYAGOGRAPHY: journeys on photo and video” refers to the central questions of the exhibition: How can physical, digital and mental journeys be visualized on photo and video? What about the promise of paradise, the dreams and longings of travel? How can space and time be inscribed in the picture?
Exhibition Duration: 15.11.2021 – 19.01.2022
