Flower fields, enchanted forests and waterfalls shrouded in mystery seem born of a wild feverish dream: enormous blossoms rear up like ancient trees toward the sky, plants mutate into something strangely familiar yet foreign, blazing sunsets shimmer in the water’s reflection, celestial bodies glow on the horizon, bathing the landscape in an otherworldly, surreal light.
The paintings of Shara Hughes (*1981 in Atlanta, Georgia) are a journey through twists and turns – the jungle of an exuberant inner world. These symbolically charged works are in part a homage to Georgia O’Keeffe, yet their expressive use of colour owes above all to Fauvist conceptions of landscape and the Expressionism of the modern era.
