On the occasion of its 250th anniversary, the ALBERTINA presents an exhibition dedicated for the first time to women artists in its collection, thereby reframing established art historical narratives. Spanning from the 15th century to the 1970s, the exhibition highlights the significant role women played in shaping artistic developments, even though their contributions were long overlooked.
Works by women draughtswomen and printmakers—already acquired by Duke Albert and Archduchess Marie Christine—are shown alongside pieces ranging from medieval convent woodcuts to early feminist positions. The presentation demonstrates that art history has always been shaped by women.
Based on an ongoing research project initiated by General Director Ralph Gleis, the exhibition reveals a remarkable diversity and numerous outstanding works that have rarely or never been shown before.
