Paintings of monumental beauty and power. Emily Kame Kngwarreye’s (1910–1996) works embody a detailed understanding of her ancestors’ land, conveying stories and knowledge passed down through generations. Arguably the most famous figure in First Nations art, who did not begin painting until her late 70s, created a comprehensive body of work over the following eight years until her death—a body of work that is the focus of this exhibition featuring artists from Australia.
The exhibition draws on the ALBERTINA’s extensive collection in this field, which comprises around 100 works and was most recently expanded by a donation from the collector couple Elisabeth Bähr and Lindsay Frost on the occasion of the museum’s 250th anniversary. Australian photographers such as Destiny Deacon and Tracey Moffatt round out the presentation of art from Down Under.
