Leonardo. Circle for Psychoanalytic Cultural Criticism is dedicated to fostering dialogue between psychoanalysts, artists, scholars, and other open-minded and engaged individuals on issues of social relevance, cultural criticism, and sociopolitical questions.
Following brief opening statements by invited guests, the audience is invited to engage in a 60-minute free-associative group exchange on the respective topic. The evening concludes with a moderated discussion, providing an opportunity to reflect together on the associative process and to explore the evening’s topic in greater depth.

Sonia Grassberger lives and works as a psychoanalyst and art historian in Vienna. She studied art history in Graz, Paris, and Vienna and works as a psychoanalyst at the Vienna Psychoanalytic Outpatient Clinic as well as in private practice. She is the head archivist of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society and researches and publishes on the intersections of psychoanalysis and visual art. She teaches psychoanalytic cultural theory at the Psychoanalytic Academy and, together with Nadja Pakesch, directs the seminar series “Art Viewing and Psychoanalysis.”
Stefan Kutzenberger, born in Linz in 1971, lives and works as a writer in Vienna. His literary work has received numerous awards, including from the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin, the German Literature Fund (Darmstadt), and the International Literature Dialogues Prize (Vienna–San Francisco). In 2021, he represented Austria with his novel Jokerman at the European Literature Night in New York. In 2024, his play Divas im Dilemma premiered. The List of the Living is his fourth novel.
Rainer Danzinger (†), psychoanalyst, group psychoanalyst, specialist in psychiatry and neurology, Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical University of Graz, and painter.
Florian Fossel, psychoanalyst and group analyst in private practice. Former head of the Group Psychoanalysis Section of the Austrian Association for Group Analysis and Group Psychotherapy (ÖAGG). Organizer of the Wednesday Salon at Café Korb.
Rainer Gross, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. After 35 years working in acute psychiatry, he now works exclusively in private practice in Vienna.
Beate Hofstadler, psychoanalyst (WAP/IPA), with a background in social science research and teaching assignments and publications on qualitative social research, psychoanalysis, and film.
Ulrike Kadi, psychoanalyst (WAP/IPA), philosopher, specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapeutic medicine at the Department of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy at the Medical University of Vienna and in private practice.
Sama Maani, psychoanalyst, psychiatrist, and writer. Publications include Why We on the Left Cannot Talk About Islam (essay collection, 2019), Žižek in Tehran (novel, 2021), and Visiting Uncle Napoleon (novel, 2026).

Sigmund Freud Museum
Vienna IX, Berggasse 19. This is the address where Sigmund Freud lived and worked for 47 years until he was forced to flee from the Nazi regime in 1938. In 1971 , the Sigmund Freud Museum was founded here, and after extensive renovation and expansion reopened in 2020. Three permanent exhibitions in Freud’s former living and office rooms, an art presentation in the Showroom Berggasse 19 as well as special exhibitions present Freud’s multi-layered cultural legacy: they are dedicated to his life and work, the development of psychoanalysis in theory and practice, and its importance for the fields of society, science, and art. The history of the house at Berggasse 19 and the fates of its occupants are also brought into focus.
