The exhibition “Being Mortal” traces across epochs and in a wide variety of media – sculpture, graphic art, painting, photography and video art – the profound meaning of death not only in the individual, but also in the collective and socio-political context. Intimate, personal approaches are explored as well as the public, political role of dying and how it is addressed.

Direkt am Stephansplatz zeigt das Dom Museum Wien die wertvollsten Schätze des Doms, darunter das älteste Porträt des Abendlandes, jenes des Habsburgers Rudolf IV. Zu sehen sind zudem Werke der Moderne und der Avantgarde aus der Sammlung Otto Mauer sowie zeitgenössische Kunst. Die Gegenüberstellung von Alt und Neu tritt besonders in den Sonderausstellungen in den Vordergrund.
