On 12 November 1898, the Secession, the world’s oldest independent exhibition house expressly dedicated to contemporary art, opened its doors for the first time. Here, a current, future-oriented exhibition programme is combined with a building whose architecture is iconic for the spirit of optimism around 1900.
Celebrate 125 years of the Secession with us!
On the occasion of the 125th anniversary, we cordially invite you to celebrate with us on Sunday, 12 November 2023. On this day, you can look forward to a colourful programme with a look behind the scenes as part of anniversary tours in German and English, a children’s programme and a meet & greet with the artists from the board.

In German at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.
In English at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Duration: 25 min.

Happy Birthday Secession! On the occasion of the 125th birthday of the Secession, visit us in the open studio and create your own work of art. Whether a sketch of the Beethoven Frieze or a colourful dome, there are no limits to your creativity.
Meet & Greet
with the artists from the board

The Secession has been run by artists since its foundation. The programme for the 10 to 15 exhibitions each year is drawn up democratically by the members of the board of the artists’ association on the basis of exclusively artistic criteria. The basic concern is the presentation of currently relevant developments in international and Austrian art.
Have you always wanted to ask the Secession board a question? How does one become president of the Secession? What would Klimt say about today’s contemporary exhibition programme? During a Meet & Greet you will have the chance to address your questions personally to the board members.
