Edelgard Gerngross developed an associative diorama with sculptural elements for the LOGIN window gallery, which she assembles into a narrative installation. In a scenic sequence, she presents idiosyncratic combinations of everyday objects and objects found in nature.

The artist succeeds in balancing opposites. Yarns and thin metal are juxtaposed with stones, wood and crystals. A finely woven structure of wire and woolen threads is able to carry and contain a rock crystal. Translated, it is ambivalences such as vulnerability and courage, doubt and trust, of which the installation under the title status quo tells. It is the representation of the actual state, of an inner feeling characterized by confidence and strength; like the shining crystal that comes to the surface out of seemingly its own power, supported by a fragile iron construction that has a surprisingly great stability. Gerngross, who sees in visual art a nature inherent in the human spirit, understands her works as a form of self-expression, in which the processes of an inner development are depicted.

Edelgard Gerngross’ presentation, designed especially for the gallery, lives through its careful conception and is determined by the search for formal harmony. Referencing nature – whether through the titles or the materials used – is a defining element of her vocabulary with magical overtones. The finely woven, sensual works are reminiscent of precious objects from baroque chambers of art and curiosities: mysterious, preciously framed finds from nature that have an inherent narrative and magical power.

Galerie nächst St. Stephan Rosemarie Schwarzwälder

The Galerie nächst St. Stephan represents a lively tradition of engagement with modern art. Since the 1920s, it has been located in the same place in the centre of Vienna at Grünangergasse 1.

With the exhibition: Signs, Floods, Signals – New Constructive and Parallel, Rosemarie Schwarzwälder presented a programme in 1984 whose basic elements are still valid today in numerous solo and group exhibitions. International positions of abstraction and conceptually based art in the fields of painting, sculpture, installation, photography and video are continuously present in the gallery programme.
