About the Work: Andreas Spiegl, cultural studies scholar
Thomas Steineder follows the route of Vienna’s two high-altitude water pipelines on foot and explores how this silent infrastructure is embedded in the landscape.
In Bildraum 01, his visual and performative exploration of these two “lines” along the kilometer-long, ever-changing landscape is on view. Diverse perspectives and varying temporalities converge here—ranging from a few steps and minutes to three months.
Thomas Steineder’s works allow viewers to experience how perception arises from the interplay of body, movement, time, and environment. In this context, humans do not appear as detached observers of the landscape, but rather as part of the very relationships and processes that give rise to the landscape in the first place.

Bildraum 01
In Vienna, once not far from the MuseumsQuartier and once directly in the heart of the Inner City, two exhibition spaces offer the best conditions for contemporary artists to position themselves in the cultural landscape.
While Bildraum 01 in Vienna’s Strauchgasse focuses on contemporary photography and graphic art, Bildraum 07 in Burggasse presents mainly painting, installation and object art.
